How to Set Up Your Home Steam Session

You can steam in the comfort of your own home, with or without a steam sauna box. Here’s what you’ll need:

—1.5 liters of pure water (if you wouldn’t drink it, don’t use it to steam)
—Herbs (ask your practitioner to recommend the right herbs for you)
—Herb pot, with a lid (stainless steel, glass, or clay/earthenware. NEVER use a plastic vessel when steaming!)
—Stovetop or portable burner
—Something to drape around yourself (a bathrobe can be great, but if you get too hot you may need a lighter option)
—A nice big towel to lay on the floor (as padding for your knees), OR a steam sauna box (if you have one)

Pour the water into the pot, and heat until it boils. Turn the heat off, and add the herbs (if you’re using Celestial Body herbs, you can toss the whole packet into the water). Let the herbs steep for about 10 minutes, keeping the lid on.

Bring the pot to your steam setup — if you don’t have a sauna box, you’ll want to make a nice padded area on the floor where you can rest your knees (a folded towel usually works well), and place a trivet under the pot since it will be hot. If you have a sauna box, place the pot inside it.

Remove the lid, and check the temperature of the steam before sitting down. The best way is to put your hand right near the water’s surface. Even though your pelvis will be a bit higher than this when you actually get in position, placing your hand right near the water is a good indication of how it will feel against your perineal area (since this is much more sensitive tissue than the hands).

Now it’s time to get in position. If you have a sauna box, simply sit down on the lid, aligning your vulva and perineal area with the opening in the lid. If you do not have a sauna box, place your knees on either side of the herb pot (being very careful not to burn yourself!), so that your pelvis is right over the top of the pot.

Drape the appropriate fabric around yourself and the pot, and…

Enjoy your steam!

***If at ANY time the steam feels too hot, either lift your cloaking fabric to let some of the steam out, or STAND UP. Hotter is NOT better, and the steam should feel totally comfortable and soothing against your pelvic area.
